be removed from the school. The state of health among the students
was excellent. Two students, however, were called out of this life
by what we may confidently hope was a blessed death.

In the past three years, too, we had the so-called military
program at our school. The only change that occurred was that, in
place of officer J. W. Leonard, we obtained a former Concordia
student and member of our Lutheran church, officer Karl Reese, in
his place. This program, too, proved itself excellent in this
triennium.

On the basis of the resolutions of the last General Synod, we
established a Septima [preparatory seventh-year class] for students
who were not adequately prepared for the Sexta [sixth-year class].
In this division, the students J. Friedrich, G. Lußky, and W.
Lichtsinn, and then P. C. Purzner, have served in succession. The
last-named still holds the position. This arrangement has proved
especially beneficial for those who have not attended a parish
school.

The resolutions of the last Synod concerning the entrances to
our dormitory have been carried out as far as the General Board of
Control could allow, given the means at its disposal.

A few years ago we also extended the steam heating into the
various professors' residences. After much inquiry back and forth,
we used so-called "split tiles" to encase the steam pipes, which were
universally recommended to us as cheap yet suitable and durable.
Even before the last Synod we knew that certain repairs to this line
would have to be made. On inquiry we were told this work would
cost about $300.00. We were authorized to make such an outlay
without a special synodical resolution. When we then began work
on this line in the summer of 1908, it turned out that the whole line
would have to be dug up and supplemented with a tunnel
connection. That, however, was to cost $1662.05. To leave the line
lying unused in the ground until this convention would have come
close to a total loss of it and would have forced all the professors to
buy new heating stoves. The General Board of Control, with whom
we discussed this matter thoroughly, recognized the necessity of
carrying out this work at once. After we offered to procure the
funds needed for this, interest-free, until this Synod, it encouraged
us to have the tunnel built and the pipe line relaid. We would
hereby ask that this undertaking be approved.

We already came before the last Synod with the request that it
grant us a new dining hall. We gave the following grounds for this
request: "If our old dining hall is to go on serving any longer, it
must be thoroughly repaired. Otherwise a new
