13. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1911. 143

St. Louis, Mo., August 14, 1908.

Rev. Chas. F. Obermeyer, Chairman,
and others of the Committee.

Gentlemen: —

In compliance with your request, we have redrafted Articles II,
III, and VI of the Articles of Association of The German Evan-
gelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, as
found on pages 54, 55, and 56 of the Synodal-Handbuch. The amend-
ments hereinafter proposed will, we believe, remove the defects in,
and objections to, said articles, and make the charter of the Synod
impervious to attack even by the State.

We propose that Article II, on page 54, be stricken out entirely
and the following substituted: —

"OBJECTS. Article II. The object of this association is to unite
in a corporate body the Synodal delegates of the German Evangelical
Lutheran Churches in Missouri and other states of the Union, which
remain true to, and acknowledge as a true exhibition of sound Chris-
tian doctrine, the Book of Concord of the year of our Lord fifteen
hundred and eighty, and who have heretofore been associated together
under the name of The German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Mis-
souri, Ohio, and Other States, for educational, charitable, and mis-
cellaneous purposes, as hereinafter more specifically set forth."

Strike out Article III, on page 54, and substitute in lieu thereof
the following: —

"MEMBERSHIP. Article III. Membership in this corporation shall
be limited to the accredited clerical and lay delegates of the said
German Evangelical Lutheran congregations in good standing and
affiliation with this Synod. Not less than two nor more than seven
congregations shall unite, at their option, in the selection of one
clerical and one lay delegate, and the delegates so chosen shall con-
stitute the members of this corporation for a period of three years
and until their successors are elected as herein provided."

Strike out Article VI, on pages 55 and 56, and substitute the
following in lieu thereof: —

"PURPOSES AND PROPERTY. Article VI. The purposes and scope of
this corporation shall be: —

"First: To have general supervision and control of the property,
real and personal, and affairs of, and to conduct the following edu-
cational institutions heretofore established (naming all now in ex-
istence), and such other educational institutions as may hereafter
come under the control of this corporation; and to establish from
time to time, and control and conduct, such other schools, colleges,
and seminaries of learning as it may deem necessary and proper.
