13. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1911. 41

All⸗

Gottes an unſerer Anſtalt dienen.

13th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1911. 41

[A small asterisk at the head of the page above the running head; a printer's mark, not a folio.]

Our Educational Institutions.

Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo.

The worthy board of control of this institution submitted the following
report on the last triennium to the Reverend General Synod, which, along
with other proposals concerning this institution, was referred to Committee
1 for review:

By God's grace our seminary has, in this triennium too, served the
purpose for which it was originally founded. Praise and thanks be to God
for that! Indeed, we have particular cause for such praise of God when we
consider the heightened degree to which the institution now fulfills its
purpose. The number of students is, after all, nearly a third greater than it
was at the time of the last report. In the school year 1908–1909 it rose to
243, in 1909–1910 to 281, and this school year we count as many as 296
students. Correspondingly, 61 left the institution for the holy preaching
office in 1909, 87 in 1910, and the number of this year's candidates is 86.
— On the whole one also notices that the young men keep their goal before
their eyes and give themselves wholly to preparing for it. One sees that
one is dealing with people who fear God and love their Savior. Naturally,
shortcomings and failings in this regard are not lacking; but that we can
say no serious excesses have occurred is certainly cause for thanks,
especially in view of the large number.

There is no change to report in the faculty's personnel. All the subjects
of the theological course are staffed by exceedingly capable and skilled
men who fear God's Word and do not spare themselves, but serve God's
cause at our institution with all the strength they can muster. And God has
evidently richly blessed their work. Unfortunately a disruption occurred
this school year in systematic theology, the chief subject of the course of
instruction, in that D. Pieper, shortly after it began, found himself forced
by his weakened health to discontinue his dogmatics lectures, and up to
this date he has not been able to resume them. On his doctor's advice he
traveled to California to recover, and since his return in February he has
ventured to give only pastoral theology. What had long been feared has
come to pass: that the double office would demand more of the man's
strength than he could bear, to the detriment not so much of the synodical
business — for here relief is provided through the vice-presidents — as of
the institution. To be sure, the other teachers have kept the students
amply occupied and made up to some extent for the missing dogmatics
lectures; nevertheless it must be regarded as a great loss that the students
had to do without these lectures themselves. The board of control
therefore, together with the faculty, takes the liberty of
