13. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1911. 115
Staate Rio Grande do Sul herausgegeben wird.

13th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1911. 115
...treasurer interpreted the resolutions differently. Your Commission had no choice but to take the funds for this institution too from the mission treasury. We ask, however, that the Venerable Synod resolve to pay the professors' salaries, the institution's rent, and the rent for the professors' dwellings out of the synodical treasury. The Synod elects the professors and sets the level of their salaries and rent, as with the other institutions, and should therefore provide for this one in the same way as for the others.
The arrangement made by the previous Delegate Synod — "that in every synodical district a representative be appointed to speak about the Brazil mission at the district convention" — has proven good, and we ask the Venerable Synod to appoint such representatives at its present session as well.
Finally, we would like to draw attention to the "Ev. Luth. Kirchenblatt für Südamerika" [Evangelical Lutheran Church Paper for South America], published by the "Ev. Luth. Pastoral Conference" in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. It appears twice a month and can be ordered from the Concordia Publishing House. Price per year: $1.00. Whoever subscribes to this paper not only receives regular news from that great mission field, but also thereby supports the work being done there.
The reason some are not quite enthusiastic about this mission is particularly this: that people think the people there are content to have God's Word preached to them but do not ask anything further of it, as shown by the fact that they themselves contribute nothing. To this the answer is: 1. that the people who are served there with Word and Sacrament are for the most part poor in earthly goods; 2. that only the Word of God itself can produce hunger and longing for it and make hearts willing to give, and that Word has so far been preached there only sparingly; 3. that even so, the fruit of the gospel is already showing itself in this very respect. From the congregations there, the following has come in for the salaries of teachers and pastors: in the year 1908, $2679.12; in 1909, $3728.36; in 1910, $4285.77. This shows a noticeable improvement and gives hope that once the good seed is sown more abundantly, a richer harvest will follow here too, and that we will one day have a self-supporting church body there.
Director E. Wegehaupt of the institution at Porto Alegre was present and gave an oral report on the acute shortage of pastors and teachers, which the young institution cannot come close to meeting.¹)
¹) The statistics current at the time of the Synod have been corrected by Director Wegehaupt, according to the latest reports of July 24, for publication in this report, as follows: We now have there 13 congregations belonging to the synod and 40 not belonging to the synod, 13 preaching stations, 14,360 souls, 6,300 communicants, and 1,923 voting members. We presently have 46 schools there.
