13. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1911. 51

13th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1911. 51
in part low attic rooms that ought not to be used for sleeping purposes at
all; some of them may fairly be called "fire-traps." In addition, the
bedrooms are scattered throughout every part of the institution. That is
a great disadvantage. d. In some dormitories there stand 30 or 40 beds
and just as many trunks.
" '2. We further found that, as regards classrooms, the institution is
poorly provided. For one thing, there are not enough of them; for
another, several of those there are, are also too small.
" 'II. Several recommendations:
" '1. We hold that the building appropriated by the Reverend General
Synod at $30,000.00 would not meet the institution's needs. We
therefore recommend that the Reverend Synod be advised against
erecting it.
" '2. We further hold that the plan proposed by the board of control —
namely, to build a new dormitory building for about 200 students and to
suitably remodel the old buildings — is the best one, because the
institution would thereby gain: a. a new dormitory building in which all
the students could live and sleep; b. a good classroom building in which
all the classrooms could be housed, along with the museum; c. in the old
building, room for all the music, library, reading, and society rooms, and
also a spacious assembly hall. We therefore recommend that the
Reverend Synod endorse this plan.
" '3. We further recommend that the Northern Illinois District ask the
General Synod to appropriate $50,000.00 for a dormitory building to be
erected at Addison and $10,000.00 for remodeling the old buildings.
" '4. We further recommend, so that the General Synod may see that
we are in earnest, that the Northern Illinois District collect a further
$30,000.00 and place this sum at the Synod's disposal for completing
the building — this sum to be collected by the congregations of the
Northern Illinois District by the next Delegate Synod.'
"This report met with general joyful and enthusiastic approval among
the synod members. The lay delegates in particular, who had held a
special meeting to discuss this matter, spoke up and declared that
conditions at Addison were such that a thorough change and
improvement of the spatial arrangements simply had to be undertaken
there under all circumstances. This was likewise expressed as the
opinion of the entire teaching staff, who had also deliberated on this
matter in a special meeting.
"The Reverend Synod then resolved as follows: above all, to ask the
General Synod to carry out the Addison building before any other.
Further, all the committee's recommendations were adopted as
synodical resolutions.
