should, for whatever reason, think that it cannot accept this offer upon consideration of the matter, the district asks an Honorable Delegate Synod to resolve at least that, going forward, it will take over the salaries of the professors for this institution.

Wishing the Honorable Synod God's rich blessing on its deliberations and proceedings, signed

The Oregon and Washington District.
In its name and by its commission,
Respectfully,
Arthur Spleiß, Secretary.

Sixth Professorship at Springfield.

To the Honorable German Ev. Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, assembled as the thirteenth Delegate Synod.

Venerable and dear brothers!

At its convention held from August 17 to 23, 1910, at Bloomington, Ill., the Central Illinois District resolved to ask the Honorable General Synod to establish a sixth professorship at our practical theological seminary at Springfield, Ill., on the grounds that our teachers at that institution are overburdened with work. (See the 2nd Report of the Central Illinois District, p. 60.)

May the Honorable Synod permit a brief demonstration of this claim to be offered in what follows.

1. In the hands of most of the professors of the said institution too many different subjects are combined. Professor R. Pieper teaches Old and New Testament exegesis, church history, pastoral theology, homiletics, liturgics, and the preaching class. Professor J. Herzer teaches dogmatics, comparative symbolics, the symbolical books, catechetics, catechesis practicums, and New Testament isagogics. Professor L. Wessel teaches exegesis, the preaching class, catechism, literature, history, rhetoric, and the language class — all in English. Professor F. Streckfuß teaches Latin, German, and catechism. Professor O. Böcler teaches Old Testament isagogics, school pedagogy, Bible history, Bible reading, German, arithmetic, geography, and penmanship. In addition, Professor Pieper has oversight of the institution, holds the Luther class, and conducts an extensive official correspondence; Professor Herzer holds the catechism class for the foreign-language students; Professors Wessel and Streckfuß direct student societies; and Professor Streckfuß manages the household treasury.

2. Under the institution's regulations from the Synod, our professors must, in every theological discipline, require and review at least two or three written papers per year, and in the general subjects must assign and correct monthly impromptu exercises and essays. With 175 students, this yields annually a large volume of written
