und Anmerkungen.

An die Ehrw. Synode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St., verſammelt als

Synode
dazu berufen und damit beauftragt werden. Eine ſolche dem Privat⸗
ſtudium dienende Bibel würde vorausſichtlich unter unſerm Chriſten⸗

Walther owes so much, we hold that with the publication of such a
biography a monument will be set not only to the memory of this
great teacher of our church, but a service will be rendered to our
children and children's children, as well as to the whole Lutheran
church of this land.

In the name and on behalf of the Baltimore City Conference,

with all respect,
Baltimore, Md., March 24, 1911. D. H. Steffens.

Publishing a Bible with Concise Explanations
and Notes.

To the Reverend Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, assembled
as the 13th Delegate Synod at St. Louis, Mo., in May 1911.

Fathers and brothers beloved in the Lord!

Some years ago our Synod had in mind to reprint the so-called
Hirschberg Bible. Subscriptions to this Bible edition were therefore
invited. The publication of the book, however, has been left undone
until now.

Now we certainly do not lack excellent devotional books. But what
we lack is a handy Bible with brief expositions and hints for the right
understanding of God's word. We do indeed have the Weimar Bible
work, as well as the Altenburg Bible work. But apart from other
considerations, neither is handy, nor will they, if only because of their
high price, find as general a circulation as would be desirable.

The Saginaw Valley Pastoral and Teachers' Conference has
therefore unanimously resolved at its autumn meeting to ask the
Reverend Synod to publish a Bible with concise explanations
and notes after the manner of the Hirschberg Bible. It is
not the conference's intent that the Hirschberg Bible should be
reprinted, but that the desired Bible should be after the manner and
plan, and perhaps also in the format and scope, of the Hirschberg
Bible. We do have, thank God, expositors of Scripture by God's grace
among us who are well able to expound the word of heavenly truth
rightly and to give excellent hints for its right understanding and right
application. And these will surely not refuse to serve the common good
with the gifts entrusted to them, should they be called and
commissioned to do so by the Reverend Synod. Such a Bible, serving
private study, would presumably find wide circulation among our
Christian people, especially if it were also furnished with a few
