206 Verhandlungen der 28. Allgemeinen oder
the Church of all ages and all climes. He held that to this end it
is necessary that the champion whom God raised up against the
Roman Antichrist should be made to still speak to the generations
of men. Walther's writings are echoes from Luther. He lighted his
torch at Wittenberg. He loved Martin Luther. And he lived to see
a work begun in our beloved city and state, — which was completed
last year, — which has grouped the name of St. Louis among the few
cities of the world from which a complete edition of Luther's works
has been published.
Walther's work is a legacy. We are his legatees. For generations
to come he has written the program for our activity as a church body.
Ignorance of what Lutheranism really is, bias and prejudice, caused
Walther to be not understood, or misunderstood, in his day. It falls
to our lot, it is our privilege to continue his work as Providence
leads us, and to widen the influence that has blessed us in the past,
so that it may extend to many others. Let us tell to our own gener-
ation in our tongue those truths, old, yet perennially new, for which
Walther became a spokesman. To us this day
The Church proclaims her honor,
And her strength is only this:
God hath laid His choice upon her,
And the work she does is His.
He His Church has firmly founded,
He will guard what He began;
We, by sin and foes surrounded,
Build her bulwarks as we can.
Frail and fleeting are our powers,
Short our days, our foresight dim,
And we own the choice not ours,
We were chosen first by Him.
Onward, then! for naught despairing
Calm we follow at His Word.
Thus through joy and sorrow bearing
Faithful witness to our Lord.
D. H. G. Stubs Rede.

D. H. G. Stub's Address.
Dear brethren, gathered in the Lord for the centennial memorial
celebration of the unforgettable Dr. Walther!
As representative of the Synod of the Norwegian Ev. Lutheran
Church in America, allow me, with a few words of appreciation for
the dear teacher, and with heartfelt thanks to our God and Father in
Christ Jesus, who has given His Church such a gift, to greet you and
to bring both synodical and personal congratulations.
