11. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1905. 163
gende Antwort:
“ ‘Only official notice and communications acceptable. Com-
pare our protest page 2, lines 18—24, ab infra, and page 4, last
paragraph. Rev. A. von Schlichten.’
(Ber., S. 85, Zeile 13 ff.)
Schlichten
ausgelaſſen hatte, hinlänglich Klarheit in dieſe Angelegenheit ge⸗
v. Schlichten mündlich und ſchriftlich abgelehnt und damit uns alle
weiteren Verhandlungen mit ihnen unmöglich gemacht.“

11th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1905. 163
telephone and by telegraph to the suspended men proved unsuccessful. (Proceedings, p. 86, top.)
"To the telegram it had sent, the committee received the following reply:
" 'Only official notice and communications acceptable. Com-
pare our protest page 2, lines 18—24, ab infra, and page 4, last
paragraph. Rev. A. von Schlichten.'
"The suspended men accordingly refused to comply with the committee's summons, official though it was. From a letter of the suspended men addressed to the chairman of the committee, it is evident that they did not wish to enter into any discussion with the committee. (Proceedings, p. 85, line 13 ff.)
"Pastors A. and E. v. Schlichten must have known that, when their case is heard before the Synod, the suspended are given opportunity to speak to their case.
"The accusation against the Central District contained in the appeal must therefore be dismissed as unfounded."
Note: After this first part of the committee report, signed by all its members, had been read, and after ample clarity had been brought to the matter through extended exchanges from both sides — in the course of which the reason was also given why the secretary had omitted the names of Pastors A. and E. v. Schlichten when reading the roll — the Synod passed the following resolution:
Resolved, that this first part of the committee report be adopted by the Synod.
"Your committee further had before it a petition signed by Pastors A. and E. v. Schlichten. This was read aloud. The men named were also asked to appear before the committee and speak to their case, and they complied with this invitation. Your committee was also inclined to recommend to the Reverend Synod that a commission be appointed to have the Cincinnati matter investigated on the Synod's behalf; but we believed we first had to put a condition to Pastors A. and E. v. Schlichten. They were to declare: 'We acknowledge that we acted wrongly in bringing our defense in the Cincinnati matter before the public before the synodical process had been concluded.'
"Pastors A. and E. v. Schlichten refused, both orally and in writing, to make this declaration, and thereby made any further negotiations with them impossible for us."
