„2. Daß die Ehrw. Synode dieſe Sache der Allgemeinen Synode

142 Proceedings of the 26th General or

Resolved, that the foregoing petition be laid on the table.

Note: The reason for the above petition was the fear that the existing union of the two offices might not be beneficial to the Church of God. It was indeed conceded on all sides that this union does, to a certain degree, detract from the professorial office, but that the blessing which, on the other hand, this union brings with it in the present case is not to be rated lightly, since in this case it concerns a personality who possesses not only full confidence within our circles but also great influence outside them. — After weighing all the circumstances, the Synod, on the basis of the facts as they have developed over time, could not resolve to carry out the desired separation of the two offices.

Support of Synodical Officers.

"The petition of the Wisconsin Valley Pastoral Conference, already submitted last year and handed over to a committee, was reviewed by that committee as follows, and the Synod adopted this opinion:

"The undersigned committee, which was appointed to review a proposal 'concerning the support of poor, sick, and infirm synodical officers salaried by the Synod, and of their widows and orphans,' hereby submits the following report:

"The proposal has the purpose of working toward a better regulation of the support of the officers named and their survivors. Since your committee is of the opinion that certain abuses exist in this regard, it proposes:

"1. That the Honorable Synod commit itself to the following principle: 'Henceforth only such officers and their survivors shall be supported as are in need of support, whether because they themselves are not blessed with earthly goods, or because their children cannot or will not fulfill their duties toward their parents.'

"2. That the Honorable Synod lay this matter before the General Synod for consideration." (Petition of the Wisconsin District.)

1. Resolved, that the General Synod commits itself to the following principle, or respectively adopts it as its directive for the future: Henceforth only such officers and their survivors shall be supported as are in need of support, whether because they themselves are not blessed with earthly goods, or because the
