110 Proceedings of the 26th General or

...three became self-supporting in the course of the triennium and are in a flourishing, in part blooming, condition, namely Chicago, Ill., Brooklyn, N.Y., and Harrisburg, Pa. Regarding the other three, it is to be reported that the congregation in Charlottesville, Va., no longer has its own pastorate but is served from Washington, D.C., and therefore no longer needed support; Wise, Mo., never had its own pastorate but was served incidentally by a pastor of our Synod, and was entirely given up some time ago, since it had long since proven to be a completely hopeless field; and Morganton, N.C., when it became vacant owing to the pastor's illness, was not filled again, but was, as before, cared for spiritually by the professors of Concordia College in Conover, N.C., until it was merged with Asheville, N.C., into one parish. At the last-named place, as well as in Springdale, Ark., and Conover, N.C. — places still supported by the commission — an English congregational school is held regularly, diligently, and with success. Springdale is an old post which otherwise has little prospect of growth; Pastor Long's field at Conover, on the other hand, will probably soon become self-supporting, and Asheville is a still-new but promising mission post, whose importance must not be underestimated on account of its healthful climate, sought out by many sufferers from lung disease. To be sure, precisely here, because of special circumstances, strong support will still be needed for a longer time, particularly also for a necessary church building already being planned.

"The sphere of activity of your commission has thus not only been, as already in the previous triennium, very limited, but has also kept growing smaller. The reason for this lies not merely in the small sum given to us for carrying on the English mission, so that we could not have made the necessary payments had not some posts become self-supporting and had not a loan, which the earlier commission had made years ago to an English congregation, been repaid. The main reason for your commission's limited activity lies in the fact that our Synod carries on English mission work in another way, and there on a far larger scale, namely through its German pastors and traveling preachers in the individual Synodical Districts. And even where purely English missions and congregations are founded, supported, and maintained, these are only in exceptional cases placed under our commission, but rather stand under the direction of the District commissions or
