An

was uns veranlaßt, dieſe weitere Bitte zu thun.

52 Proceedings of the 26th General or

"The state of health among the students was quite excellent, so
that over the three years no more than $10.00 had to be paid for
medical treatment, and only a few hours of class were missed due
to illness.

"The prevailing spirit among the students was, thank God, a
Christian one. No gross offenses against God's commandments
came to light. The students' diligence varied and was better in
one year than in another, but was on average satisfactory.

"God the Lord has called home, by a blessed death, Rev. P. J. H.
Sieker, a longtime member of the Board of Oversight. The Board
of Oversight has elected Rev. P. W. Köpchen to take his place.

"The Board of Oversight has managed with the greatest possible
economy and has incurred only such expenses as were absolutely
necessary. Everything has also been in order, except that last
winter the pipes of the steam heating system proved to be eaten
through by rust, and for the last part of the winter one had to
make do with stoves. These pipes must be replaced with new ones,
but to our knowledge neither this nor any other necessary repair
will exceed the permitted sum of $500.00.

"Since it is the duty of the Board of Oversight to see to it that
the professors at our institution do not have to struggle with
worries about their livelihood, we would like, on the basis of our
inquiries into the matter, to move that the salary of Professors
Stein and Heintze be raised to $1000.00 plus free housing, and that
Prof. Walker's salary be raised to $900.00 a year. In our judgment
this will make an honest living without luxury possible.

"Finally, the Board of Oversight, urged and encouraged to do so
by the New York—New England Conference, would like to ask that
a Secunda and a Prima be added to the existing classes and the
institution be made into a full gymnasium. The number of our
students is admittedly small when compared with that of our
institutions in the West. Yet our institution can already hold its
own in this respect compared with other similar institutions in the
East. What we argued, and what the synod acknowledged as valid,
when we asked for a Tertia, is the very same thing that now leads
us to make this further request. We believe that this institution of
ours has a mission in the East in more than one respect: that it
acts like salt against the more refined unbelief that is widespread
at most of the higher institutions in our region; that it has
contributed not a little toward uniting our congregations, which
come from such very different circles; but also that
