46 Proceedings of the 26th General or

St. Paul's Progymnasium at Concordia, Mo.

"In presenting the following report to the Reverend Delegate
Synod, we point out that we have cause to praise God's goodness
and grace, which has prevailed throughout the past three-year
period.

"We thank it first of all that the state of health in the institution
has been good, so that despite individual cases of illness
instruction never had to suffer any interruption. Our dear faculty,
too, has been able to enjoy sustained health through all its work,
with the exception, however, of our director, who was ill for a
considerable time but, thank God, was able to take up his work
again fully recovered at the start of the last school year. We also
thank the goodness and grace of God for the preservation of a
Christian spirit and Christian conduct among the students.
Whenever the sinful flesh sought to break out, God's Word
subdued it and restored discipline and order.

"But God's grace has also been with the institution in another
respect. We are especially glad to be able to report that the
expansion of the institution into a middle gymnasium, that is, the
addition of a Tertia class, resolved on by the Reverend Synod in
1902, has proved a blessing. A larger number of students entered
the institution at once, and this increase has remained the same
every year since. The institution numbers 105 students this year.

"The increase in the number of students was such, and space
became so lacking, that an extraordinary remedy became
necessary. On the recommendation and with the approval of the
Reverend General Presidium and of the Reverend District
presidents, a new brick building (40x60 feet) was erected for
$4950.00, containing a spacious dining hall with kitchen and
storeroom, a large dormitory, and a separate dwelling for the
servants.

"Finally, we thank the grace of God that our institution was
preserved from complete destruction by fire, and our students from
a horrible death. On March 11, at midday, a fire broke out in the
roof of the main building, probably caused by a spark from a
chimney. With the prevailing wind and the dryness, the fire
threatened the institution with total destruction. Next to God, we
thank the heroic efforts of the city fire department for confining
the fire to the third floor of the building. The damage caused by
fire and water can be covered by an expenditure of $3000.00.
