ſo gewaltig emporſtrebende Volk derſelben in ihrem Heimathlande

11th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1905. 109

...ordinary schools and higher institutions of learning, but also attend evening schools, set up especially for them, in great numbers. This circumstance is likewise being taken advantage of by the sects in the interest of their mission. The conference therefore believed that we too could gain entry among them so easily and work among them with success.

"Finally, it was emphasized what incalculable blessing such a mission among the local Japanese might also prove to be for their people, now rising so powerfully in their own homeland, since most of these people remain here only a few years before returning with the knowledge they have gained. It was thus quite impossible to foresee what far-reaching significance such a mission might attain through God's grace and blessing. Nor should it be forgotten that the Japanese are the teachers of the Chinese, and that through such a mission we could fittingly also serve this people, numbering so many millions, who still sit almost entirely in the dreadful darkness of heathendom.

"From all the conference's discussions on this matter, the resolution finally emerged to lay this important matter before the Reverend Delegate Synod for thorough and serious consideration, and to ask it earnestly to take up the said mission as soon as possible, or to instruct the Commission for Heathen Missions to call a man into this work at once. The conference will most gladly stand by him with counsel and deed." (Petition of the California-Concordia Conference.)

Resolved, that the petition of the California-Concordia Conference be placed in the hands of the Commission for Heathen Missions, with instructions to act in this matter according to its findings and to the best of its judgment.

English Mission and the Language Question

(with reference to the English Synod of Missouri).

"Your Commission for English Mission has, during the past three years, supported the work of the English-language mission at 9 places, namely in Chicago, Ill. (Pastor Schüßler), Brooklyn, N.Y.
