26 Proceedings of the 26th General or
..."no one could break the backbone of the Synod." But let us also not
forget that almost all doctrinal controversies and separations in the
church originally stem from personal bitterness. Let us therefore
carefully avoid everything by which personal bitterness can be
produced, and wherever, through the devil's deceit, bitterness has
crept in anywhere, we must cast it out of our hearts by God's grace.
"Be diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace," the
Holy Spirit admonishes through the apostle in Ephesians 4:3.
Finally I recall that at the end of last month, on May 29, the
Reverend Dr. H. C. Schwan, who for 21 years, namely from 1878 to 1899,
was President of the General Synod, departed this life. I considered
it my duty to represent the General Synod at the funeral of its
former, longtime president. What a gifted, God-graced leader in right
doctrine and right practice the departed was, the whole Synod knows.
Let us remember our teachers, who have spoken to us the Word of God,
and let us not cease asking God that he remain with us with his Word
and his grace, as he was with our fathers. Amen.

"We again begin our report with a heartfelt praise of God, whose
faithful care and gracious rule we have to thank for our institution
having preserved its character to this day. It is still a school of
the prophets, in which no doctrine is taught other than that of the
Word of God, and whose teachers and students are evidently governed
by the Spirit of God. That is something great in our evil age. With
their accustomed faithfulness and perseverance the professors have
attended to their office, and the students, too, have on the whole
worked diligently and made good use of their time. We are also glad
to report that in general good discipline and order have prevailed
in the institution and that the students have shown themselves to be
God-fearing people. Some serious cases of illness...
