Decem⸗
ber 1903 vom Ehrw. Präſes Niemann veröffentlichte ‚amtliche An⸗
A. und E. v. Schlichten zu veranlaſſen, nach Indianapolis zu kom⸗
men und vor der Commiſſion zu erſcheinen. (Ber., S. 86.)
A. und E. v. Schlichten abgeſandt:
“ ‘Revs. A. and E. von Schlichten,
“ ‘1522 Race Street, Cincinnati, Ohio.
“ ‘Committee of Synod in matter of suspension desires to
speak with you. Come at once and bring minutes pertaining to
case in question.
“ ‘Am waiting for an answer at 19 S. Meridian Street. — C. A.

confirmed the suspension imposed on two pastors, without having given the suspended men opportunity to answer for themselves. At the request of the appellants present, they were readily permitted to appear before the committee and to make oral explanatory or supporting additions to their appeal. Their committee has now thoroughly examined both the content of the appeal and the statements of the appellants, and takes leave to submit the following report to the Reverend Synod:
"Your committee is convinced that the appellants have not proven the charge raised in their appeal against the Central District, but that, on the contrary, the suspended men were given opportunity to answer for themselves. The suspended men's answer had to take place before the Synod. This was known to the suspended men. The notice of the District's meeting that appeared in the "Lutheraner" was in itself already a summons to the suspended men to appear and answer for themselves, and they ought to have presented themselves. But they did not appear, nor did they give any reason why they did not appear. Furthermore, the Synod of the Central District appointed a committee to evaluate the "official notice" published by the Reverend President Niemann in the "Lutheraner" of December 8, 1903, containing the suspension of Pastors A. and E. v. Schlichten. (Proceedings of the Central District for 1904, p. 81.)
"In choosing this five-member committee, the greatest care was exercised. (Proceedings, p. 80.)
"This committee made every effort to induce Pastors A. and E. v. Schlichten to come to Indianapolis and appear before the commission. (Proceedings, p. 86.)
"The committee accordingly sent the following telegram to the Reverend Pastors A. and E. v. Schlichten:
" 'Revs. A. and E. von Schlichten,
" '1522 Race Street, Cincinnati, Ohio.
" 'Committee of Synod in matter of suspension desires to
speak with you. Come at once and bring minutes pertaining to
case in question.
" 'Am waiting for an answer at 19 S. Meridian Street. — C. A.
Frank.' (Proceedings, p. 84.)
"That the committee in question, in sending this invitation to the suspended men, was acting in accordance with the Synod's intent goes without saying. — But all the summonses, which were sent both by
