168 Proceedings of the 29th General or
During the past triennium, the General Relief Commission has, as
needed, supported the dependents of several deceased missionaries who
had served the General Synod, through the relief commissions of the
districts in which they lived, which kept control over the
disbursements.
However much every district should strive to support, according to
need, its own disabled and unemployable pastors and teachers and the
survivors of deceased ministers of the Word, no district should
hesitate to request assistance from the General Relief Fund when
those in need would otherwise suffer want.
The Raithel Endowment and the Lina Pötsch Bequest are under the
administration of the Bequests Commission, which assigns us only the
yield.
It should gratefully be noted here that Mrs. Marie Rittmann and Mr.
Hermann Fiebig have remembered the Relief Fund with a bequest.
The petitions of several congregations, whose distress was such that,
in the judgment of the district officers concerned, help could only be
given through a free gift, were endorsed. We would, however, point
out here that it would serve better control over the gifts of love
received for such purposes if the Synod were to determine that all
such gifts should pass through the hands of the General Relief
Commission and be disbursed by it.
Committee report.
The treasurer's report has been examined by the responsible audit
committee and found correct.
At the close of its report, the General Relief Commission expresses
the wish that the Synod resolve that all gifts for congregations in
need of help pass through its hands and be disbursed by it, since this
would serve better control over the gifts of love received for that
purpose. Your committee endorses this.
The committee's recommendation was adopted as a resolution, with the
understanding that, of course, the gifts are not sent by the
congregations directly to the commission, but, as before, pass through
the hands of the district treasurers and the General Treasurer.
The Care of Disabled Servants of the Church and of Their
Dependents, Respectively Their Survivors.
The following petition was before the Synod:
It is a fact as undeniable as it is sad and distressing that, given
the constant rise in the price of all the necessities of life, both
the salary of most ministers of the
