Education Society of California”.
Anſtalt ganz direkt mithelfen läßt, Arbeiter in ihren Beruf einzuführen,

64 Proceedings of the 29th General or
this assumption — we say it with great joy — to be mistaken. Decisive
steps had to be taken to deal with the unbearable lack of space, and we
can gladly inform the Reverend Synod that we shall, God willing,
provide the institution with a new, enlarged home.
Two years ago, members of our congregations in California and Nevada
joined together in an association under the name "Lutheran Education
Society of California." This society has taken on the task of
vigorously supporting Lutheran education in our distant West, and it
has succeeded in purchasing, for $11,500, a five-acre plot of land
located in the eastern part of Oakland, which it presented as a gift to
the California and Nevada District at the last synodical convention,
for the purpose of having the Synod erect there a new building suited
to the institution's growth.
The district accepted the gift with joy and resolved to grant $35,000
for such a building. The work of collecting for the building has been
partly accomplished, and the results so far justify the hope that our
dear institution will be able to move into a fine new home yet this
year. Our Lord now makes us all the more confident in our prayer that
he send laborers into his harvest even beyond the Rocky Mountains, as
he lets us, through our institution, directly help introduce into
their calling laborers who present themselves for the service.
The dear Delegate Synod will surely join wholeheartedly in our praise
and thanks for God's goodness at the joy that God so wonderfully
sustains one of its lesser members, and will surely not hold it
against us if we lay before a Reverend Synod a few requests, whose
approval should be of great benefit to our institution.
1. First we would ask a Reverend Synod to authorize the above
institution's electoral board to call a further teacher, should
circumstances in the next triennium require it.
We would already have found ourselves in great difficulty this school
year had not Prof. Th. Brohm Sr., who has settled in Oakland with his
children, agreed to take on a number of teaching hours. Such help is
already indispensably necessary now; for the professors provided by
the Reverend Synod, H. Jonas and Th. Brohm Jr., absolutely cannot
manage the work among our pupils alone, and since enrollment and thus
the workload will increase considerably further in the coming
triennium, we feel compelled to ask the Reverend Synod to grant our
local institution a further teacher as soon as its electoral board
judges it necessary.
2. Secondly, we take the liberty of asking a Reverend Synod to remove
an uncertainty regarding the rent for Prof. Jonas, and to instruct the
treasurer to pay the rent for Prof. Jonas in the
