14. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1914. 33

Beſondere Gratifikation an Kontraktoren.

weiterführe;

Advokat aber habe folgende Erklärung ſchriftlich abgegeben: “The
opinion will hold that a foreign corporation not for pecuniary profit,
organized in Missouri for educational purposes, may take by devise
and hold in the State of Illinois property necessary for its purpose.
And the opinion will be backed by a first-class bond to the value of
the River Forest property.”

14th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1914. 33

Special Gratuity to Contractors.

One of the contractors who erected the buildings at River Forest
ultimately recorded a loss of $2660. This did not seem improbable to
the Synod when it was reported that this man's bid had been $9000
lower than the next-highest bid.

Another of the contractors suffered damage of $851 from a windstorm
that arose during construction, which he would gladly share with the
Synod.

Resolved, that the General Board of Control, together with
the local board of control, shall make good the loss of both firms
to the extent that they can demonstrate they have suffered loss.

A Charter of Its Own for the Teachers' Seminary in River Forest.

Such a motion was before the Synod. Under the proposed new charter,
the Synod (according to Committee 2's statement) would, in the eyes
of the law, have surrendered all rights to the institution. Although
the Synod had long since resolved that the property of all its
institutions should stand in the Synod's own name, the following
resolutions were nevertheless adopted:

1. that the Synod refrain from incorporating the institution at
River Forest and continue to operate this institution under the
Synod's own charter;

2. that the property at River Forest, which has been deeded to the
Synod, remain standing in the Synod's name.

Before these resolutions were adopted, Committee 2 also pointed out
that it had consulted two attorneys. One of them, to be sure, had
expressed the opinion that a Synod incorporated in the State of
Missouri could not, under the laws of the State of Illinois, hold
property and could not operate the institution at River Forest under
the Synod's charter. The other attorney, however, had given the
following opinion in writing: "The opinion will hold that a foreign
corporation not for pecuniary profit, organized in Missouri for
educational purposes, may take by devise and hold in the State of
Illinois property necessary for its purpose. And the opinion will be
backed by a first-class bond to the value of the River Forest
property."

Property Transfers.

The resolution making the sale of our synodical property at Addison
legally valid and binding was, to be sure, already adopted in 1911
(see the report of the 13th Delegate Synod, p. 53, § 6). But since
the sale took place only shortly before this year's Synod,
