14. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1914. 47

ſchuldig machen wollen, ſo ginge es doch nicht. Wir haben große Klaſſen;
ihnen, dann iſt die Not erſt recht groß.

14th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1914. 47

$1500.00 had been granted. In view of the shortfall in the building
fund, we have postponed this work in the hope that God's goodness will
preserve us from severe visitations of illness.

There is a matter that can no longer be postponed, on account of which
we must come before the Synod with a request for a grant. The privy of
the institution is in such a condition that a remedy must necessarily
be provided here. In our judgment this should be accomplished by
installing so-called toilet-rooms in two buildings, connected to the
existing wash-rooms. For the installation of such toilet-rooms we have
an estimate before us amounting to $5500.00. We must hereby urgently
request this sum. It is the only new appropriation from the building
fund that we are asking for this time.

And now we have one more matter, and probably the most important, to
lay before the dear Synod. It concerns the creation of an eighth
professorship at our institution. All our professors must work beyond
their strength. We therefore felt compelled to make use of the right
granted to us and to provide for temporary help, so that at present
eight teachers serve the institution. How we should manage in the
future with seven teachers we are unable to see. Even if we were to
strain our professors mercilessly, a lovelessness of which we do not
wish to be guilty, it still would not work. We have large classes; one
class had to be divided, and will in the future have to remain divided
in several subjects at least. In addition, a number of pupils need
special tutoring, since they enter the institution insufficiently
prepared. More attention should also be given to German-language
instruction, because many pupils, owing to their inclination toward
English, can barely manage in German. Even when all the teachers are
in full vigor, no more can possibly be asked of them than they are
already doing. And should one of them fall ill, the hardship becomes
truly great. In short, we know of nothing better to do than to urgently
petition the Synod for the establishment of an eighth chair. This
request comes not only from the board of control but also, at the same
time, from the out-of-town members of the electoral board. We would
gladly manage longer as we are, but we cannot stake either the health
of our professors or the welfare of our institution.

Resolutions.

Resolved, that the $1500 granted three years ago for a hospital now be
raised and paid out.

Resolved, to grant $2000 for further repairs.

Resolved, to grant the sum of $5500 for toilet rooms.
