190 Appendix: Golden Jubilee of the Institution at River Forest.

Appendix.

Golden Jubilee of the Institution at River Forest.

As a side note, before the year 1855 a total of only 11 teachers had
been trained at our ministerial seminary, now at Fort Wayne, Ind. Then
Pastors Fleischmann, Lochner, Dulitz, and Teacher Diez founded a private
institution in Milwaukee, Wis., for the training of Lutheran teachers.
After only two years the Synod made this institution its own and moved
it to Fort Wayne. There it eked out a meager existence in rented
quarters. The Synod resolved to give it a home of its own, namely at
Addison, Ill. This took place in the year 1864, that is, fifty years
ago. Since that time more than 1,500 teachers have gone forth from this
institution into our synodical school system. And in October 1913 the
entire institution — the real estate having been sold to a Lutheran
children's-welfare society — moved to River Forest.

There, on the Sunday afternoon of the convention, the synodical jubilee
celebration took place, after all the congregations of our Synod at
Chicago had held celebrations that morning in their churches.

About 30,000 Lutherans took part in the jubilee celebration on the
festival grounds at River Forest. The following program was carried
out:

1. Trombone choir. Conductor: E. C. Hoffmann.

2. Opening of the celebration.

3. Congregational hymn: "Praise to the Lord."

4. Seminary pupils' choir: "I Will Sing of the Grace of the Lord."
Conductor: Prof. A. Käppel.

5. Scripture reading.

6. Children's choir: "To Thee, O Lord, Be Praise." Conductor: O. Buszin.

7. German addresses, given simultaneously at three locations.

8. Men's choir: "Shout to God, All the Earth!" Conductor: M. O. Frieser.

9. English addresses, given simultaneously at three locations.

10. Mixed choir: "The Heavens Resound." Conductor: O. F. Rusch.

11. The Lord's Prayer and the benediction.

12. Congregational hymn: "Thus Far Hath God Brought Me."

13. Trombone choir.

The German festival preachers were Pastors Vice-President P. Brand,
Pastor H. Speckhard, and President H. Daib. The English festival
preachers were Prof. L. Wessel, Pastor W. Schönfeld, and Pastor H.
Eckhardt.
