14. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1914. 25
Die Aufſichtsbehörde hat nach Bedürfnis Verſammlungen gehalten;
Nr.

14th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1914. 25
including 35 non-degree students; the candidates' class numbers 27.
For such manifest blessing we owe thanks to our gracious God. How
necessary the institution still is may be seen from the fact that
not every year could all requests for vicars and helpers be met. In
the year 1911/12, 81 requests for vicars came in; in 1912/13, 44;
and this year, 48.
The Lord has also graciously kept the seminary and its student body
from harm and danger during the past triennium. No actual epidemics
of illness have occurred. That sporadic individual cases of illness
occurred, e.g. nervous fever, is to be expected with so large a
student body. Shortly before the close of the last school year the
Lord called one of the candidates home to heaven by a blessed death.
Our dear professors have, by God's faithful mercy, been granted
health and strength, so that they could attend to their laborious
office with almost no interruption.
There has been no change in the faculty. The assistant-teacher
position authorized by the last synodical convention was, after a
candidate from St. Louis was unsuccessfully called in the summer of
1911, filled by Rev. Edwin Gross, who, besides serving his own
congregation, has taught the so-called "preparatory class" [*Vorklaſſe*]
with good skill and success. The arrangement has proven very useful.
Apart from a few disciplinary cases, which in several instances
resulted in expulsion from the institution, it must be said to the
credit of the student body that the fear of God, discipline, and
order prevail among them, and that brotherly correction is also
practiced by them. Regrettably, however, disturbances of order and
other excesses have repeatedly occurred in the classes of one of the
professors, which have been dealt with as best as possible.
The board of control has held meetings as needed; the institution's
electoral college has also duly met on several occasions to attend
to its responsibilities.
Among the particular tasks of the board of control during the last
three years, it should be mentioned that it had the deeds and other
papers relating to the institution's property put in proper order
and made accurate; further, that it had the larger repairs to the
professors' residences and to Building No. II, resolved by the last
Delegate Synod, carried out. To be sure, the restoration of
Institution Building No. II, on which almost nothing had been done
since its erection 24 years ago, considerably exceeded the sum
authorized. But, encouraged by the General Board of Control, the
building has been thoroughly improved, though only this past summer,
because the money for it was not made available to us any sooner.
The excess expenditure of $1652.68 was drawn from the synodical
treasury, which otherwise pays for repairs. — The addition to Prof.
