14. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1914. 61
Ad. Häntzſchel diente dann vorläufig als Direktor. An Stelle Prof.

14th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1914. 61
Hemmeter was elected as his successor but, at his congregation's
request, declined the call. For a number of reasons, the committee then
refrained for the time being from filling the directorship, and called
one of the candidates from St. Louis, W. O. Bischoff, as professor.
Prof. Weiss was asked to serve temporarily as director. In July 1913
he accepted a call to Petersburg, Ill., and Prof. Ad. Häntzschel then
served temporarily as director. In place of Prof. Bischoff, who
accepted a call to the congregation at Conover, another candidate from
St. Louis, Martin Coyner, was called.
Over the course of two years, however, it became apparent that
discontinuing the institution's upper classes was harmful and did not
at all correspond to the sentiment and hopes of our congregations in
the surrounding area. And since this institution, as the Reverend
Synod had itself recognized at the time, is very much needed for the
mission in the Southeast, the chairman of this committee called a
meeting, which was also attended by the Reverend General President of
the Synod, the president of the English District, a member of the
Conover trustees, a member of the English District's mission board,
Rev. Dr. Pieper, and Prof. Dau. The whole matter of the institution and
of our mission in the Southeast was then reconsidered once more, with
the following result:
It was recognized that our work, as well as the still great task of
our Church in the Southeast, requires continuing the institution as a
full gymnasium for English-speaking pupils, but in such a way that it
serves local needs regarding higher education and our Church's
missionary duties there. It was recognized that such an institution
could, at the present enrollment, be run by four professors, as
before.
The committee accordingly resolved that the institution continue as a
full gymnasium, as formerly, on condition that, at the present
enrollment, four professors share the work, and that the German course
be conducted as intensively as possible.
Rev. H. B. Hemmeter was now again elected president of the institution,
this time following the Synod's order, and accepted the call in
January 1914.
Proposals.
Our Synod owns only one professor's residence in Conover. It is
absolutely necessary for the Synod to attend to this matter. For the
director called, a house is available in Prof. Weiss's former
residence. He offers it to the Synod at cost price of $2300.00. The
committee urgently recommends that the Synod buy this house.
We shall then still need two more professors' residences. A building
lot secured privately for us some time ago has been lost to us through
the departure of a former professor. It is, however, still in friendly
hands, and there is hope that
