88 Proceedings of the 29th General or

Slovak Mission.

As is evident from the report of the foreign-language mission commission, it has, with the approval of the General Praesidium and the consent of the president of the Slovak Synod, taken up the Slovak Mission in Detroit, and this mission is flourishing under God's blessing.

Further Recommendations.

Since the immigration of foreign-language Lutheran Christians has been especially strong in recent years and will presumably remain strong in the future, it is obvious that, if we want to win these people for ourselves, we must have more preachers who will take up their cause. The request therefore goes out that the Reverend Synod see to it that more young foreign-language-speaking men are sent to our educational institutions.

Furthermore, if we are to expand the mission among the foreign-language groups in the coming triennium, adding ever more preachers to the present number, then it is clear that we will also need more money to carry this mission forward.

Your committee recommends that each of our congregations let at least one collection a year, even if only a modest one, flow to this mission.†) (See †) p. 89.)

We further recommend to the Reverend Synod that it be made the duty of the professors at our educational institutions to encourage those pupils and students who can speak a foreign tongue to train themselves sufficiently in that tongue, so that, when needed, they can be sent out able to preach in it.

According to a resolution of the previous General Synod, a fund was to be established for foreign-language students. This has been done. It has turned out that this is a wise arrangement, for in this way our foreign-language students could be given the necessary board money and more. May the Reverend Synod continue to commend this fund to the loving care of the Christians!

As indicated in the petition, the Reverend Synod will need at least $7,000 annually in the coming years to carry on its foreign-language missions. We recommend: 1. that this $7,000 be pledged; 2. that we resolve to exert ourselves to provide the necessary money; 3. that we authorize the commission, should the mission expand and more workers need to be hired and paid, to exceed the fixed sum.

It is indeed a fact that until now the foreign-language missions have not been sufficiently known in our Synod. But these missions are also missions of the whole Synod and should become known. So that this may come about, your committee recommends to the Reverend Synod that a man be appointed for each district to represent the cause of the foreign-language missions at the district synods.
