14. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1914. 181

dern gerade auch der religiöſen Freiheit;
gegen die Landeskonſtitution einnimmt;
feiertag erhoben worden iſt;
und weil dieſe römiſchen Beſtrebungen jeden
patriotiſchen Bürger in tiefſter Seele verletzen
unſers Landes wegen ſeiner Beteiligung an der römiſchen Meſſe;
geſetzlichen Nationalfeiertag;

14th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1914. 181
c. In conclusion, we recommend that the Synod adopt the pre-committee's
proposal that the Synod arrange for the striking of commemorative medals,
as was already done at the 350th jubilee celebration of the Reformation
in the year 1867. — Adopted.

Roman Catholic Political Propaganda in This Country.
1. In view of the fact that the Roman Catholic Church is striving ever
more to influence and dominate the civil government of our country for
its own purposes and interests, contrary to the fundamental principle of
our Constitution, the separation of church and state, and thereby
endangers not only civil liberty but precisely also religious liberty;
2. in consideration of the fact that this uncanny power has already
succeeded in moving our presidents to glorify, in an official capacity on
Thanksgiving Day, the idolatrous Roman Catholic Mass, even though it is
precisely the presidents who are supposed to uphold the national
Constitution, and it cannot be unknown to them that the Roman Catholic
hierarchy in principle rejects the separation of church and state
rightly established here, and thus takes a revolutionary stance against
the national Constitution;
3. in view of the fact that recently, once again, chiefly through Roman
Catholic machinations, a petition has been made to the Congress of our
country to establish by law, in honor of October 12, a national holiday
not so much for a discoverer as rather for a member of the Roman
Catholic Church, which is all the more strange since no historically
important day of our country — not even Independence Day, July 4 — has
yet been raised to a national holiday;
and since these Roman Catholic endeavors must wound every patriotic
citizen to the depths of the soul and fill many Christians with earnest
concern:
be it therefore resolved,
a. that we, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other
States, make representation to the President of our country regarding
his participation in the Roman Catholic Mass;
b. that we, as a body, protest to the national Congress against the
raising of the so-called Columbus Day to a legal national holiday;
c. that the General President of our Synod be charged and authorized to
make representation, in the name of the Synod, to the President, whenever
similar efforts that confound church and state should again come to
light.
