14. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1914. 71

In aller Hochachtung zeichnet

W. Arndt, Sekretär des Weſtl. Diſtrikts.

Concordia, Mo., 6.

14th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1914. 71

Since the Synod's 1905 resolution — concerning instruction in organ playing at all our educational institutions — has not been carried out and does not appear to be readily practicable, but since the need that resolution was meant to address can, in our view, be remedied in a more easily practicable way, we move that that resolution be rescinded and replaced with the following:

Resolved, that all students at our pastoral seminaries who have not yet had any music instruction be given enough instruction in organ playing to be able to play our chorales on a harmonium.

With all due respect,

W. Arndt, Secretary of the Western District.

Concordia, Mo., March 6, 1914.

Tabled for now as not currently practicable.

Temporary Vicariates During the School Year.

The Faculty at St. Louis had sent the Synod the following communication:

To the Reverend Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, assembled at Chicago from May 6 to 16, 1914.

Dear Sirs and Brethren:

The undersigned Faculty of Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., is asked with increasing frequency, year by year, to release students of the institution for shorter or longer periods to assist in church or school work. In mid-February of this year the number of requests for vicars for a full year stood at 60, the number of requests for temporary assistance at 24, and still more requests are expected. The Faculty is inclined to release as year-long vicars all those who are so inclined and who receive their parents' permission, since such practical experience in preaching and teaching is, as a rule, only beneficial to our students. It holds, however, that temporary assistance during the school year should be granted only in quite special emergencies — when, for instance, an area is left entirely without provision and neither young nor old can be given any instruction in God's Word, or when a vacant parish is in particular danger, as the *Präses* [district president] or the mission commission of the district concerned must attest in accordance with the Synod's constitution. Missing weeks of lectures during the school year always means a serious loss for the student concerned, even in the period from Easter to the end of the year, and we cannot fill every vacancy in our large Synod. We also hold that for vacancies in the teaching office, other ar—
