14. Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1914. 53

14th Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1914. 53

blessing hand over us and the work entrusted to us, has shielded our
property from fire and other calamity, has kept death and misfortune
away from our student body, and has granted us teachers who, with the
gifts given them, served in their responsible office in the fear of
God, with joy and faithfulness, and therefore also with skill and
blessing. He has preserved for our congregations in the East a warm
interest and lively zeal for this school of the General Synod, so that
the institution's various needs could be met. Through their willingness
to give, the debt burden still resting on the board of control was also
so far reduced that within a few months it will doubtless count among
past cares.

At the last Delegate Synod in St. Louis, Mo., it was resolved to
authorize the Bronxville board of control to build the six urgently
needed professors' residences, provided it could obtain the necessary
money at a low interest rate; but none of these residences was to cost
more than $6000.00. We have, of course, not let so favorable an
opportunity to finally provide our institution's teachers with a
suitable home pass unused. We have borrowed the money needed for
building from our fellow believers here and had the six residences
built, in which the families of our professors have made their homes
since the end of October 1912. However, after careful deliberation, we
found ourselves compelled to exceed the building sum approved by the
Delegate Synod by more than $4000.00; but since the board of control is
responsible for this additional expense, a Reverend Synod will surely
be only pleased that, through the love of some fellow Christians, it
has come into better housing than could have been achieved with the
sum the Synod approved. These new buildings have also considerably
reduced rent expenses.

Various further improvements have likewise been made to the
institution's property, for which our fellow believers in the East, and
especially the local Lutheran Education Society, provided the
necessary funds.

Diligent work has also been done on the institution's internal
development. To relieve our director and to offer our pupils as much
sound instruction as possible in chemistry, physics, and algebra, the
board of control also secured, during the past triennium, the services
of men specially trained in these disciplines. Salary and rent for
these assistant teachers were most kindly provided by the local
Lutheran Education Society and two of its members on the board of
control. At present Mr. Hugo Kühn of Baltimore, Md., gives instruction
in the subjects named, but next school year we shall have to do without
his valuable services, since in the coming fall he intends his
university studies, interrupted for our sake, to
