Ernte in dieſer Gegend rechte Segensjahre.
men ein guter. Dir.

(On assistant teachers, see p. 67.)
St. John's College at Winfield, Kans.
Communications and requests of the honorable board of control:
The institution at Winfield celebrates its twentieth anniversary this
year. It was on March 1, 1894, that the institution was formally
presented as a gift to the English Synod by the late Mr. J. P. Baden
and dedicated as a nursery for future ministers of the Word. Small and
modest was its beginning, as was, 75 years before, the beginning of the
Synod's first school, the little log cabin at Altenburg, Mo. But the
Lord was with us, as he was with our fathers, and under his blessing
the institution has developed splendidly. The past three years in
particular, on which we now wish especially to submit to the Reverend
Synod our due report, were, despite the great lack of space and the in
part poor harvests in this region, truly years of blessing.
The Lord has held his protecting hand over our institution and has
crowned the teachers' instruction and the pupils' study with much
blessing. The director has discharged his office as the institution's
inspector and as house-father of the pupils with all diligence, has
watched over the pupils' spiritual welfare, and has practiced Christian
discipline. The teachers have carried out their office faithfully and
conscientiously and with skill, and have adorned it with a godly walk
of life. The religious instruction given at the institution has been
given according to the Word of God as understood by the symbolical
writings [the Lutheran confessions]. Regular morning and evening
devotions were also held. The pupils regularly attended the
congregation's Sunday German and English services. The health of the
teachers and pupils was, with few exceptions, good. Dir. Meyer fell ill
during the 1911/12 school year, which made his duties temporarily more
difficult. Although we lack a gymnasium, care was nevertheless taken to
provide the necessary physical exercise. During the past triennium we
have had a larger number of illustrated catalogs printed and sent out.
We have also reported regularly on the institution's welfare in the
"Kansas Kinderfreund." In the institution's interest, the professors
divided among themselves attendance at the various district pastoral
conferences as well as at the Texas District's synod.
