Resolutions.
Resolved, to add to the sum of $15,000 already granted earlier a
further sum of $22,500.
Note. $15,000 was already granted three years ago, but was not raised
during the triennium. The Kansas District had undertaken to add
$15,000; this is secured. Architect Walker gave a particular reason
why not merely a further $15,000, but $22,500, should be granted: that
the Synod should from now on build fireproof at least the buildings
that must also serve as dormitories. He pointed to the fire at River
Forest, which would probably have cost human lives had it broken out
later at night and in the pupils' dormitories.
Resolved, to reject the request for $5000 for a new director's
residence.
(On assistant teachers, see p. 67.)
Concordia College at Conover, N.C.
The Synod had before it the following communications from a special
committee appointed three years ago:
The Reverend Delegate Synod of 1911 adopted, among others, the
following resolutions concerning this committee:
P. 39: "Resolved, that in view of the present mission interests and of
our continuing work in the Southeast of our country — the German work
as well as the English — maintaining a school at Conover is, for the
present, urgently called for.
"Resolved, that an authorized committee be sent by the General Synod
to Conover at once, to negotiate on the spot with the local board of
control regarding the institution's future status, and to settle and
determine it."
In accordance with this charge, the undersigned committee visited the
institution at Conover, N.C., with the result that it discontinued the
three upper classes, referred their pupils to Fort Wayne, where
arrangements for them had been promised, and permitted the institution
at Conover four professors, with instructions to adapt the institution
more to its perceived local needs. Rev. C. O. Smith was called to an
existing vacancy, and some necessary repairs were also allowed.
Not long after this first meeting of the committee, Prof. G. A. Romoser
accepted a call to Cleveland, O. Rev. H. B.
