———

176 Proceedings of the 29th General or
pleasing unity in the Lutheran Church of our country, and that it, the
Iowa Synod, is prepared to negotiate officially with the representatives
of other synods, your committee recommends that the Reverend President
appoint a committee to consider whether and how to proceed in the matter
of uniting the Lutheran Church of America with other synods.
Recommendation adopted as a resolution.

Our Relationship to the Norwegian Synod.
(Communication of D. Pieper to the assembly in Chicago.)
———
"The Norwegian Synod, which has hitherto stood in church fellowship with
the Synodical Conference, has taken steps to unite with two other
Norwegian synods, namely the so-called United Church and the Hauge
Synod.
"The union articles drafted for this purpose and adopted by a large
majority do not fully agree with the doctrine known from Holy Scripture
and the Lutheran Confessions.
"The Synodical Conference therefore, at its last meeting in 1912,
appointed a committee with the charge to visit the next meeting of the
Norwegian Synod and to confer in a brotherly manner with the brethren
about the objections that the Synodical Conference had to raise against
their union articles.
"The Synodical Conference's committee was unable to carry out its charge,
because the church council of the Norwegian Synod did not consider it
expedient for the committee to appear before the assembled Synod. The
Norwegian Synod in 1913 made this opinion of its church council its own.
The Norwegian Synod did, however, appoint a committee to carry on
negotiations with the Synodical Conference's committee, with the
intention that unity of faith between the two church bodies might be
preserved.
"The Synodical Conference's committee believed it had no right to allow a
negotiation with a committee to take the place of negotiations with the
Synod, and will report to this effect to this year's meeting of the
Synodical Conference.
"It goes without saying that members of the Missouri Synod have carried
on occasional brotherly negotiations with members of the Norwegian
Synod, without wishing to prejudge the negotiations of the Synodical
Conference."
