Zehnten Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1902. 95
Was dieſer

Tenth Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1902. 95
Delancey Street, where it is still located today. The Jewish watchers
have followed us at every turn. The Thomche Hajudoth still post their
watchmen before our hall today and try to intercept the children and warn
them against our missionary; but of course they may not stage such
uproar and mischief here as on Pitt Street, not because they have grown
more pious, but because our hall lies opposite a police station. Only a
few weeks ago the missionary had to ask the police for help, which was
given him at once and led to a Jewish woman being taken by the police
to the station, but released with a warning, since the missionary did
not wish to have her locked up.
"Under all these aggravating circumstances the work of public preaching
to adult Jews on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as Christian instruction
of the children, is being zealously continued. In the course of the past
three years our missionary has preached 114 sermons in New York before
1,067 Jews, showing them from the prophecies and their fulfillment in
Christ that he is the Savior of the world — the seed of the woman who
crushed the head of the infernal serpent, the blessing of Abraham in
whom all generations should be blessed, the son of a virgin whose
government is upon his shoulder, and whose name is: Counselor, Power,
Hero, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Also in Boston our missionary,
at a special invitation, preached to the Jews 9 times, the total
number of hearers at these sermons amounting to 135. Likewise the
missionary held Sabbath and Sunday school, with catechism examination
and biblical instruction, 323 times in the past three years, at which the
total number of pupils came to 7,432. What this instruction, through
preaching and catechesis, has accomplished cannot, of course, be
established by numbers; but this much is certain, that the LORD, who
is all-knowing, knows it, and eternity will reveal it, and that we shall
marvel and wonder at it and thank, extol, and praise God for it forever.
This we believe on the basis of the promises that God himself has given
to his word, which shall not return empty, but, like rain and snow that
moisten the earth and make it fruitful and cause it to grow, so that it
yields seed to sow and bread to eat, so shall his word also be: it shall
do what pleases him and accomplish that for which he sends it. But
although this work of public preaching and teaching is the chief labor
of our missionary, it does not constitute his only and entire activity.
Private visits to Jewish families, and receiving visitors at the mission
and in his own home, occupy our missionary the whole week through. Thus
in the course of the three years he has visited 2,264 families in New
York alone, and 430 in Brooklyn, discussed religious questions with them
and invited them to preaching; likewise he has distributed 3,554
Christian tracts, 328 New
