in viel ausgedehnterem Maße engliſche Miſſion treibt.

74 Proceedings of the 25th General, or

Mr. Schulze, to continue looking after the people there and to wait and
see how matters there develop in the future.

18. Resolved, that the travel costs of Mr. P. Poch — from England to
America and back — be covered by a collection.

(This resolution was carried out at once, sparing the fund for the
London mission this expense.)

English Mission.

"During the past three years your Committee for English Missions has,
with the modest funds placed at its disposal, carried on the work of the
English mission in 13 places. . . . — In addition, during the past three
years your Committee has supported the mission society of the students
of our Concordia Seminary here, which has been active in and around
St. Louis, with the necessary funds, periodicals, and books, and has
likewise had the $400.00 per year granted by the Synod for Concordia
College in Conover, N.C., paid out quarterly.

"The scope of your Committee's work has thus, as before, been very
limited in the past triennium as well. This is due partly to the small
sum of the funds provided, and partly — and chiefly — to the fact that
our Synod carries on English mission work in a much more extensive way
by other means. For one thing, a great deal of English preaching and
mission work is done in every one of our synodical districts, especially
in the fields of Home Missions, and the number of pastors of our Synod
who also regularly officiate in the English language runs well into the
hundreds. Your Committee, by contrast, as a rule deals only with those
fields that are served by pastors of our English sister synod. For
another, the larger part of the sums raised by our Synod for English
mission work within the territory of the English sister synod does not
pass through your Committee's hands at all, but is directed straight to
the English mission congregations concerned, with the result that these
items are consequently not under your Committee's charge.

"These and other circumstances prompt your Committee to draw the
Reverend Synod's attention to the question whether the time has not
come to abolish the Committee for English Missions
altogether and to refer all English mission work partly to the German
mission committees of the individual synodical districts, and partly to
our English sister synod. Of course, provision would then have to be
made at once for the continued support of the fields now under your
Committee's care."
