waren, dieſelben in genügender Quantität früh genug herzuſtellen, ohne an⸗

114 Proceedings of the 25th General, or
entertainment paper such as the *Concordia Magazine* was not large
enough to continue it in its existing form and shape, while the demand for
a paper in English along the lines of the German *Kinder- und
Jugendblatt* [Children's and Youth Paper] kept growing. As a result, after
consulting the views of the theological faculty in St. Louis and with the
consent of the Reverend General President, Prof. F. Pieper, we resolved to
transform it, from January 1 of this year, into a paper for the upper grades
of our schools and for our confirmed youth, and to publish it under the
name 'Young Lutherans' Magazine.' In the few months since this English
youth paper began appearing, it has already become clear that a real need
for such a paper, and a demand for it, did exist — it already has over 9,000
subscribers.
"Unfortunately some books here and there could not be delivered on
time, because with the old machines we had been using we were not able
to produce them in sufficient quantity early enough without letting other
necessary work sit idle. This shortcoming will, however, be remedied in
the future, since these machines are being replaced by new and more
practical ones.
"By resolution of the Reverend Synod of 1899, the operating capital of
the Concordia Publishing House was to be reduced to $300,000.00. We
have tried to do justice to this resolution, but it was not possible for us to
reduce it to the set amount. We have reduced it every year as much as
possible, without disrupting the operation of the business or burdening
our customers too heavily, and the capital now stands at $300,000.00
with a surplus account of $34,759.17.
"As the General Agent's report shows, outstanding accounts have been
reduced quite considerably.
"By resignation, Messrs. W. C. Schütz and H. F. Kirchhoff left the
Board of Directors, and in their place, with the consent of the Reverend
General President, Messrs. Louis Hofman and Joseph Schüssler were
elected.
"A new state law required us to install two additional fire escapes on
our printing-house building.
"The Board of Directors held its regular business meetings every
month along with a number of special meetings; the books and cash of the
business were also audited weekly by a committee of the board, and the
monthly trial balances and the quarterly and annual reports of the agent
were examined and found correct.
"We further take the liberty of recommending to the Reverend Synod
for suitable action: that the Synod encourage and request the Reverend
General President, Prof. F. Pieper, to continue the dogmatics work he
began several years ago
