62 Verhandlungen der 25ſten Allgemeinen oder

der Anſtalt in treuer Uebereinſtimmung. Es iſt uns keine Differenz unter
ihnen bekannt geworden.

führung des Hauptgebäudes her.

62 Proceedings of the 25th General, or

of the institution in faithful agreement. No disagreement among them has
become known to us.

"The expenditures which we had to lay upon the Honorable Synod, and
whose amount can most readily be seen from the report of the General
Treasurer, arose chiefly from the not-conscientious construction of the
main building. The smaller expenditures arose in the ordinary way from
wear and the effects of wind and weather.

"The household fund stands free of debt, although we have no
congregations around us that could support us with produce. It must not
be concealed that we owe this result to the prudent and, down to the
smallest detail, conscientious management of all those involved, through
which, for example also through minor repairs, many an expense is spared
the Synod.

"The small Lutheran congregation that has gathered around the
institution's congregation is regularly served with preaching and
administration of the sacraments. Through the labor of our faithful
professors the truly Lutheran congregation in White Plains, N.Y., has
also come into being, which now has a pastor of its own. Unfortunately
they must almost unceasingly help out with preaching services now here,
now there, so that their activity also bears the character of a mission.

"Since there are always some pupils who, if we do not wish to turn them
away, need special instruction until they can finally master the work of
the class; and since, as indicated above, the entire management of the
household — purchasing, paying, and recording of daily needs, repairs
of minor damages, etc. — lies in so few faithful hands, it fills us with
concern whether our professors will not succumb under the burden. They
have not complained, and we mention it only gratefully, in order to give
the Synod's dear members some insight into their work through this as
well.

"The institution entrusted to us has as yet received no grant for the
library and the natural-history cabinet. And yet both facilities are
necessary. Carefully selected books should be available to the pupils.
The equipment so far available to the pupils for the study of chemistry
is private property. The teachers' library offers almost nothing at all.
We therefore ask that the Honorable Synod set aside an annual sum for
Hawthorne as well for the acquisition of books and teaching materials.

"Furthermore we believe that we would not be fulfilling our duty as a
Board of Control if we did not wish to draw attention to the following.

"The Eastern District, upon handing over the institution, expressed the
wish that it be expanded over time into a full Gymnasium. In our report
three years ago we touched on the matter
