136 Proceedings of the 24th General, or
children should also be taught in the other; and further, which
language should then be the one exclusively used, or the preferred
one." (Excerpt from the petition of the board of directors of the
deaf-mute institute at North Detroit, Mich.)
Resolved, that the Synod give the board of directors the following
advice:
"1. Those pupils who are now at the institute shall continue to be
taught as before.
"2. In new classes, English spoken language and sign language shall
be used.
"3. Gifted pupils shall also be given instruction in the German
language. Together with these latter, the children of such parents as
absolutely insist on German instruction may likewise be taught."
School Inspection.
Resolved, regarding the petition that the Synod order more
systematic oversight of our parochial school system through the
appointment of special school inspectors, that the following
committee report be adopted: "We do not consider it advisable to lay
this matter before this year's Synod, but consider it fitting that
the matter first be made known more widely through the 'Schulblatt,'
so that the individual conferences and District synods may take it up
for discussion."
Several Resolutions Concerning the Southern District.
Resolved, that, since the office of the army chaplain who stood under
the oversight of the Southern District, Pastor C. J. Broders — who
during his term of office at various places in the South "had 1281
Lutheran soldiers under his pastoral care, and was able to comfort and
uplift 239 of them in their days of sickness, and to prepare six of
them for a blessed end and grant them a Christian burial" — has now
lapsed, this be brought to the knowledge of our congregations through
the "Lutheraner," so that collections not continue to be sent in for
the said office.
Resolved, that the sum of $734.15 still remaining in the "chaplain's
fund" [Feldpredigerkasse] be transferred to the Home Missions fund in
the Southern District.
