men ſind.
So

Grippe zu thun. — Die Zahl der Schüler war 1896—1897: 153;
1897—1898: 173; 1898—1899: 183.

$1900.00 koſten;

50 Proceedings of the 24th General, or

...the professors with the necessary seriousness and in proper love. This
is of course not to say that many weaknesses and vices of the flesh, and
indeed serious falls into sin, have not occurred. Even gross disciplinary
cases, which made the removal of a few students from the institution
necessary, have not been spared the institution. As sad as this is on the
one hand, we must, on the other hand, also thank God that he brought these
corrupting spirits to light so that they could be removed. At the same
time, such occurrences should teach us to pray still more diligently for
our institutions, and to send them only such students as show a truly
Christian, obedient disposition and a proper earnestness in sanctification.

"The state of health of the students has been very good. On one
occasion four were struck by diphtheria. But God graciously let them
recover again soon, and prevented the outbreak from spreading further.
While these four students still had to keep to their room, however,
measles entered the institution. Many students caught it. This made it
plain to all of us once again how badly we need some proper sickrooms.
This winter many students came down with the flu. — The number of
students was: 1896-1897: 153; 1897-1898: 173; 1898-1899: 183.

"The board considers it its duty to explain, with a few remarks, why
the running expenses for our institution were so large in these years.
Along the entire east side of our college grounds the city opened a
street, the construction of which cost us $850.00. In Fort Wayne the
Synod has buildings, the newest of which was erected about thirty years
ago and the oldest more than fifty years ago — buildings in whose
construction the deciding question was not: how can one build most
durably and best? but rather: how can one, at least cheaply, provide the
necessary space for now? Anyone can imagine that after so many years, many
costly repairs become necessary.

"Finally, we would like to lay before the Reverend Synod the following
three requests for appropriations:

"1. We ask for a proper bathing and washing facility. The old
facilities are altogether insufficient to maintain, in an institution this
large, the necessary cleanliness and the health so closely bound up with
it. In addition, these old facilities are now in such a state that they
would have to be almost entirely renewed if they were to continue serving.
A truly durable bathing and washing facility meeting requirements would,
in the judgment of experts we have consulted, cost about $1900.00;
