134 Proceedings of the 24th General, or
Synod that this petition be answered to the effect that it is more
advisable to appoint special committees for such cases, and that no
further resolution is needed in the matter, since this already falls
within the powers of the Very Reverend General President."
Appeals.
1. "The Lutheran St. John's congregation at Newburgh, O., expresses
in a petition the request that the Reverend Synod investigate, and if
possible settle, the dispute existing between the said congregation
and the Zion congregation at Bedford." (Excerpt from the committee
report.)
Resolved, that the General Synod appoint a committee of three
members, namely Professor Pieper and Presidents P. Brand and J.
Strasen, who shall investigate the dispute on the spot and settle it
if possible.
2. Resolved, that the report of the committee appointed three years
ago by the General Synod in the matter of Mr. F. Oldakowski — to the
effect that the said committee has brought the matters concerned to a
conclusion and full resolution — be adopted.
3. Resolved, that the report of the committee appointed by the last
Delegate Synod in the matter of Mrs. Mathilde Lenz of Janesville,
Wis. — to the effect that, through an investigation conducted on the
spot, the committee satisfied itself that the pastor, church council,
and congregation had dealt with this woman according to God's Word —
be adopted.
4. Resolved, that the appeal of certain members of the Ev. Lutheran
Trinity congregation at St. Joseph, Mich., be referred back to the
Michigan District, since the appellants have attached no documents
whatsoever to their appeal, so that the General Synod is simply not
in a position to judge the matter concerned.
5. "Pastor W. Burmester had already, before the Delegate Synod in
Fort Wayne three years ago, filed an appeal to the General Synod, but
withdrew his appeal pursuant to an agreement with the committee.
Although, in the committee's judgment, the arrangement made at that
time has been carried out, the complainant nevertheless believes he
cannot be satisfied with the state of the matter, and, in view of the
nature and circumstances of the whole case, the committee believes it
should recommend the following to the Synod:
"a. That, so far as the Synod is concerned, Pastor Burmester's
request for an investigation of his case on the spot be granted.
