Zweck angegeben) or for some other purpose or purposes determined

theran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and other States, and its assigns,
forever, the following property, to wit: (hier folgt die Beſchreibung des
Eigenthums), such property to be disposed of by said Synod, or in

or for some other use determined by the said Synod.

Professors' Salaries and Pensions.

"At the last meeting of the Central District's pastoral conference,
held in Indianapolis, Ind., last year on the occasion of that
District's synodical assembly, it was resolved to ask the Reverend
Synod to subject the salaries of the professors at the Synod's
educational institutions, as well as the so-called pension matter of
the Synod, to a review.

"The setting of these salaries, as it now stands, rests neither on the
principle of justice nor on that of love. In fixing them, no regard
is given either to the person of the individual — whether unmarried,
or blessed with a large or small family, etc. — or to office,
position, requirements, performance, etc.; rather, as far as one can
tell from the synodical reports, all the professors are placed on an
equal salary, with the exception of the directors, who receive more
than their colleagues, though for reasons that, it seems, no longer
apply, and of two St. Louis professors who, on account of their large
families, have been granted a salary supplement. Granting a salary
supplement on this ground is nothing new in the Synod.

"But in setting the salaries as they now stand, the principle that
has rightly (in accordance with God's Word) long prevailed in the
Synod has been abandoned. And this principle we called simply 'the
principle of love.'

"The aforesaid pastoral conference of the Central District is of the
opinion that the Reverend Synod should return fully and completely
to this principle — that is, that in fixing salaries it should not act
wholesale ['in Bausch und Bogen'], nor, as is generally the way of the
world, have regard to office, position, capability, etc., but rather,
as was formerly the case, have regard to the 'person': whether that
person is unmarried, blessed with a large or small family, living in a
place where the cost of living is high or lower, etc.
