Proceedings of the Ninth Delegate Synod,
assembled at
St. Louis, Mo.,
from April 26 to May 6, 1899.
I. N. I. [In Nomine Iesu — In the name of Jesus]
By resolution of the Eighth Delegate Synod, held three years earlier at
Fort Wayne, Ind., the General Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and other states
convened as the Ninth Delegate Synod on Wednesday, April 26, at St.
Louis, Mo., and held its sessions there until Saturday toward evening, in
the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross [Kirche zum heiligen
Kreuz] (Pastor C. C. Schmidt).
On the morning of April 26, at 9:30, the Synod was opened in the
named church with a worship service, at which Vice-President J. P. Beyer
of Brooklyn, N. Y., preached on 1 John 2:15–18.
In all, 18 sessions were held, 9 in the morning and 9 in the afternoon.
The hours were set so that the morning sessions ran from 9 to 11:30 —
later from 8:30 to 11:30 — and the afternoon sessions from 2 to 5
o'clock. Each session was opened with singing, the reading of a passage
of Scripture from the Altenburg Bible commentary, prayer, and the
blessing of the LORD, by the chaplain appointed by the Synod, the Rev.
H. W. Lothmann, and was closed by the General President, the Rev. Dr.
H. C. Schwan, or by his deputy chairman, with the prayer of the Lord's
Prayer [Vater-Unser]. — In addition, a pastoral conference and a teachers'
conference were also held.
At the organization of the Synod, which took place on the afternoon of
April 26, it was found that the following delegates
1) Were present:
I. From the Southern District:*)
a) With voting rights:
1. Pastors: C. J. Crämer; C. Bernthal; H. Sieck.
2. Deputies [lay delegates]: E. Ganz (of Pastor E. W. Kuss's
congregation); C. Zoch (of Pastor A. L. Gresen's congregation); H. Biar
(of Pastor E. Mörbe's congregation).
*) The order of the districts is determined by the order of their meeting
dates the previous year. — The order of the delegates follows the order in
which they are given in the reports of the individual district synods.
