Ninth Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1899. 99
live among them. My request now is that the Reverend Synod take over
this Indian mission and provide it with a missionary of its own."
(Excerpt from a petition of Pastor Th. Nickels of Shawano, Wis.,
concerning the Indian mission there.)
Resolved, that the General Synod make its own the Indian mission
in the State of Wisconsin hitherto carried on and directed by Pastor
Th. Nickel.
Resolved, that a special commission of three members be appointed
to carry on and direct the said mission. (See "Synodical Officers.")
Resolved, that a pastor of his own be called for this Indian
mission and supported from a fund to be established for it.
Resolved, that from that same fund the expenses incurred by
Pastor Th. Nickel in carrying on this mission, amounting to about
$200.00, be reimbursed to him.
Proposed Establishment of New Missions in South America, or
Brazil, on the Sandwich Islands, on Cuba and Puerto Rico,
and in Japan.
Resolved, that the matter of a newly established Home Mission
in South America, and particularly in Brazil, or the two petitions
concerning it, be placed in the hands of the General Commission for
Home Missions. (See the fuller provisions under the heading "Home
Mission.")
Resolved, that the petition, or inquiry, "whether it is not time
to extend the Synod's mission work also to the Sandwich Islands, thickly
settled by Germans," be handed over to the California and Oregon
District of the General Synod for further consideration, with the
charge to investigate and ascertain exactly how matters stand there
regarding the church care of the Germans, and, should a mission field
present itself to us there, to take up the mission work on that field
open to us, in cooperation with the General Mission Commission for
Home Missions and in consultation with the General President.
Resolved, that the mission matter concerning Cuba and Puerto Rico
be referred to the Southern District of the General Synod, with the
charge to act in this matter according to its best judgment.
Resolved, that the plan, again proposed from several quarters, of
making a beginning of a mission in Japan, be declined.
