68 Proceedings of the 24th General, or
found, then much money is drawn off from the mission by the often
very high rent.
Resolved, that the General Commission for Home Missions be
charged with assisting the mission congregation entrusted to it by the
Synod in the city of millions, London, England, so that it can engage
and pay a capable teacher, or rather second pastor — who would then
also have to keep school, should that serve it more or better — inasmuch
as — and this must surely fill the heart of every upright Christian with
great joy and heartfelt thanks toward our faithful God — the mission in
London has, under God's blessing, prospered so far that the little
congregation there now covers its present needs itself and therefore no
longer makes any claims on the mission fund in this respect.
Resolved, that Pastor Schulze of London, England, who after three
years of faithful service to the mission congregation there is presently
staying among us to share in the blessings of our synodical sessions, be
asked to lay before the Synod assembled here the circumstances of the
London congregation from his own observation and personal
experience.
Resolved — after Pastor Schulze had granted the Synod's request
by joyfully opening his mouth — that the General Mission Commission
address a petition to our congregations for the giving of love-offerings
toward providing housing for Pastor Schulze in London, since the poor
little congregation there has to raise $600.00 a year for his rented
lodging.
Resolved, that Pastor Dorn be requested, in the "Kinder- und
Jugendblatt" [Children's and Youth Paper], to lay the situation of the
Lutheran church in London vividly upon the hearts of the children and
young people — for instance, that our brethren there, for lack of any
other place, or because the rent for one is unaffordable, have had to
make use of a room in a basement, etc., for holding their worship
services; what a good work, therefore, the dear children and young
people would be doing if, by opening their savings banks, they helped
the poor congregation there to a little church, or at least to a decent
prayer hall.
Resolved, that a collection be taken up at once to cover Pastor
Schulze's traveling expenses.
Resolved, that the surplus of this collection — it came to the sum
of $150.50 — be assigned to the fund of the little congregation at
London.
Resolved, that the petition asking that our Synod now also take up
the work of Home Missions in South America, particularly in Brazil and
Argentina, since conditions there are at present very favorable, be
placed in the hands of the General Commission for
