Neunten Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1899. 61

Aufnahme meldeten. In dieſen drei Jahren ſind bloß 28 neu eingetreten.

ſpätere Leben vorbereitenden Studiums bleiben könnten;

dem Studium zu widmen, und ſie zu dieſem Zwecke zu unterſtützen;

Depot) nur eine kleine Stunde per Bahn entfernt, liegt ſchön und geſund;
wollen.

„Wir haben auch Erfreuliches zu berichten:

„Erſtens arbeitet unſer Lehrercollegium in treuſter Eintracht, um
jeden Schüler zu einem tüchtigen Menſchen heranzubilden;

ſeliger Sinn;

leiden gehabt.

„Endlich viertens (man erlaube uns, dieſen weit zurückgreifenden

Ninth Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1899. 61

"The officers of the Eastern District, in carrying out the measures
resolved on by the Synod, were able to see to it that the first resolution
could be carried out. The fine, large property has been transferred to
the Reverend General Synod free of debt.

"The second resolution has of course likewise been followed. The
Tertia has been discontinued, although the Christian mentioned above
would have been willing to go on paying the professor's salary.

"The upkeep of the buildings etc. has cost the General Synod
nothing, since the Eastern District was obligated to bear that expense
as long as the property had not been transferred to the General Synod.

"The institution's history apart from this has, in the past three
years, much that is discouraging to show, but also much that is
gratifying. Discouraging above all has been the small number of
students who applied for admission. In these three years only 28 have
newly entered. At present there are 27 students in the three existing
classes. If we are to name perceptible causes for this small number of
students, they are the following:

"First, the discontinuation of the Tertia. That was a hard blow
for the circles most immediately concerned, who had hoped to keep an
institution for their boys in which they could remain until the end of
the studies preparing them for their later life;

"second, the fact that there seemed to be a surplus of candidates
for the preaching office. Pastors and congregations alike consequently
did not feel prompted to encourage capable boys to devote themselves
to study, and to support them for that purpose;

"third, the outward location of the institution. This was of course
chosen by a committee appointed by the Synod of the Eastern District,
which certainly acted looking up to the Lord in faith. The place is,
moreover, only a short hour by rail from the lower center of the city of
New York (Grand Central Depot), and lies beautifully and healthily; but
still too far for such students whose parents wish to keep them at home.

"We have gratifying things to report as well:

"First, our faculty works in the most faithful harmony to form
every student into a capable human being;

"second, a fresh and yet godly spirit prevails among the students;

"third, we have had no illnesses worth mentioning to suffer from.

"Finally, fourth (allow us to add this point, which reaches rather
far back), the percentage of those who from our Progymnasium have
entered, or are on the way to entering, the service of our Synod
