Engliſche Miſſion in New Orleans, La.
Synode ermuntert wer⸗

"And so may our emigrant mission once again be commended anew to
the care of our faithful God and his true Church. May he be gracious
to us and further prosper among us the work of our hands — indeed,
may he prosper the work of our hands. Amen." (Report of the Emigrant
Mission Commission at Baltimore.)
English Mission in New Orleans, La.
On this matter the Evangelical Lutheran congregations at New
Orleans had, on the advice of the "English Committee" of the Western
Synodical District, addressed a petition to the Synod, containing and
supporting the request that the Synod establish an English mission in
New Orleans and appoint a suitable man as English missionary in that
city.
". . . 1. The congregations in New Orleans are of the opinion
that, if anywhere, then in New Orleans an English mission should be
established, since it becomes ever more apparent that there is a very
large number of Germans there who, through lack of knowledge of the
German language, are prevented from enjoying the blessing of the Word
as it is offered in the preaching, as well as in the devotional and
doctrinal writings, of our church. — The same holds true of the
Scandinavians who live there and could be won for an English
congregation.
"2. The congregations in New Orleans do not believe that the
founding of an orthodox English (Lutheran) congregation will in any
way harm the German congregations there; on the contrary, they
believe that more fruitful care could be provided particularly for
those children who now, because they lack sufficient knowledge of
their mother tongue, must be confirmed in English. Thus, for example,
already 13 children are being confirmed in English this year, for
whom further care ought now to be provided, if they are not to fall
to the English sects.
"3. Their committee by no means wishes to encourage the rapid
inroads of English into our congregations; but it would like, through
the above, to point out the importance of the English mission in New
Orleans. Their committee, however, considers it most expedient that
the dear congregations in New Orleans be encouraged by the Reverend
Synod to take this matter in hand themselves, and indeed at once,
before some other body calling itself Lutheran begins an English
mission there.
