Vierten Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1884. 37

Die Committee iſt daher be⸗

Fourth Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. 1884. 37

taken upon itself; it recognizes it as not merely the right but
the duty of the Reverend Synod to pronounce the sharpest
censure upon the committee for this, and submits willingly
to it. The Reverend Synod may, however, be assured that the building
erected is, in every respect, not only what it ought to be — a thoroughly
solid building — but also that the sum spent on it is fully worth it,
indeed, on the testimony of expert men, even cheap, and that it could
hardly be built again for this price. Here the committee further permits
itself to state quite explicitly that no responsibility whatever for this
great cost overrun falls upon the Right Reverend General President
Schwan. For as soon as he heard of it, he came here, called the
building committee together, and demanded an accounting of it. The
committee's report in the November issue of the "Lutheraner," volume
1882, appeared at his instigation and with his approval. He warned and
urged the committee to do its utmost in thrift and restraint, and it
promised to do so and tried to keep to this as conscientiously as
possible. But by then nothing significant could any longer be changed
about the total sum. The committee is therefore ready to make this
confession of its guilt and to beg the forgiveness of the Reverend
Synod."

After this statement had been delivered by Pastor Hanser on behalf
of the other members of the building committee, and the request for
forgiveness expressed in it had been made, all those who had
previously signaled a wish to speak further on this matter withdrew
their names, and it was

Resolved, that the Synod declare itself satisfied following the
statement just heard, and express its thanks to the members of the
building committee for the great effort and diligence which they
expended in carrying out this building.

"Although this past triennium (a period of three years) was not
without various hardships and painfully humbling experiences for the
theological institution here, it is precisely in this period that the proofs
of our God's blessing, help, and preservation have been so notable that
we have more reason than ever, with heart, mouth, and hands, to thank
the LORD. Among these belongs, in particular, the increase in the
number of our students, which now stands at more than 180 — greater,
therefore, than at any time since the practical institute was founded;
further, the prevailing state of health, since the institution has
been kept safe from epidemics, as from other serious illnesses,
