50 Proceedings of the 19th General [Synod], or

A motion was made to build a dwelling for Prof. Zucker, for whom, until now, a house had to be rented, one moreover at a considerable distance from the institution.

Resolved, that the motion concerning the building of a new teacher's dwelling at Fort Wayne be submitted to the next Delegate Synod for deliberation and, as the case may be, resolution.

Resolved, that at the college at Fort Wayne, from now on, vacation shall begin on the last Wednesday of June and end on the last Wednesday of August (both dates inclusive).

Commissioned by the Synod to do so, Pastor Sauer, a member of the Board of Control, read out an excerpt, prepared by him together with Prof. Dr. Dümling and Pastor K. Moll, from the medical health report of the college at Fort Wayne. From this report, together with the discussions carried on for some time concerning its content, the Synod learned with joy and thanks to God that the climate-related illnesses, with which the college's pupils were formerly so frequently afflicted, have almost entirely disappeared. To be sure, various kinds of illness were not lacking, particularly indisposition from colds, though mostly of very short duration. These, however, are for the most part to be blamed on the youthful thoughtlessness of those who suffered them. — It was also testified by the Faculty at St. Louis that the pupils they receive from the college at Fort Wayne, where they had spent 5 to 6 years, are strong and healthy people, in whom nothing can be noticed to suggest that they are supposed to have lived so long in as unhealthy a city as Fort Wayne has had the reputation of being until now. Further, reference was made to the state of health of the professors and pastors present here from Fort Wayne, which, as every member of the Synod could satisfy himself with his own eyes, leaves nothing to be desired. — The motion therefore also met no opposition that the school year at the college at Fort Wayne, which formerly, for the sake of the local climatic conditions, began only at the beginning of October, should henceforth begin along with the start of the school year at all the Synod's other institutions. Morally, too, as the discussions on this showed, things stand well at the institution. Fort Wayne is not too large a city and gives the pupils less opportunity to fall into immoral conduct.

Whereas the arrangement of the washrooms in the basement of the building is not only a very deficient one, but also one harmful to the pupils' state of health, and a bathing facility is entirely lacking at the institution:

Resolved, that for the establishment of a suitable washing and bathing facility at the college at Fort Wayne the sum of $500 be granted. What arrangement is accordingly to be made shall be left to the best judgment of the Board of Control.
