Vierten Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1884. 21

Was nun ſämmtliche Anſtalten zugleich betrifft, ſo iſt bekanntlich ein

Aufblühen von Progymnaſien in Milwaukee, New York, New
berechtigt.

Fourth Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. 1884. 21

of the emergency building already carried out and of a salary increase,
the appointment of a teacher for English instruction, and it puts two
questions to the Synod: one concerning the sending of the Synod's
publications to the library there, the other about the salary supplement
for the steward that was resolved on earlier.

An even more significant appropriation than for Springfield is
requested by the supervisory board of our teachers' seminary
[*Schullehrerseminar*]. There, too, there is without doubt not enough
room, especially since a special division has been set up there — to
general rejoicing, to be sure — for those students who have already
received some preparatory or seminary-level instruction in Germany but
are not yet sufficiently grounded in doctrine and are still unfamiliar with
the English language, and who therefore, once admitted, need special
instruction of their own. Judging by the number of those who, before
this division was set up, unfortunately had to be turned away, we may
now expect a considerable number of students to be trained in a shorter
time. And that will be of great benefit to us. For the space to be
provided there as well, Dr. Dümling has kindly drawn up a plan, which
is estimated at $20,000 to $21,000. We owe another plan to Mr. May,
the architect. The supervisory board further requests the appointment
of a seventh teacher, the building of two teachers' residences, together
costing $5,000, and the construction of a plank walkway for about $500.

As for all the institutions together, a proposal has, as is known,
already met with general approval from all the districts: that their
presidency be combined with the directorate. It will now be for the
Delegate Synod to reach a final decision on this matter. To that end I
will hand the proposal itself, together with the remarks already made
on it or still to be made (and then submitted as soon as possible), over
to a committee for examination and formulation.

Everywhere, no doubt, people have rejoiced at the rise and
flourishing of pro-gymnasiums [*Progymnasien*, secondary schools
preparing students for a Gymnasium] in Milwaukee, New York, New
Orleans, Wittenberg, and Concordia, to which may also be added a
division of the higher municipal school [*Bürgerschule*] in St. Louis and
some private schools in individual congregations. Regarding the
institution at Milwaukee in particular, which has for the time being been
placed under the oversight of the General President's office and where
I accordingly spent a few days, I can, as regards both teachers and
students and also the household management, the state of health, and
the like, assure the Reverend Synod that everything is arranged in the
best possible way and gives grounds for the finest hopes.
