Vierten Delegatenſynode von Miſſouri, Ohio u. a. St. 1884. 79

Fourth Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States. 1884. 79

"Further, the pastors in and near New Orleans should be asked to
preach in English as often as possible, and, together with their
congregations, to take the lead in forming an English congregation, in
the good confidence that our synodical congregations outside New
Orleans (where the need of the English congregation requires it) will
be Christianly willing to support this English mission in New Orleans
with gifts of love." (Committee report on the petition concerning the
founding of an English mission at New Orleans.)

Resolved, that this committee report be adopted, and that the
congregations in New Orleans be encouraged, in accordance with point 3
of the foregoing report, to proceed at once with the beginning of an
English mission, or rather the formation of an English congregation.

                Pro-Seminary at Milwaukee, Wis.

"The delegates of the Minnesota and Dakota, the Illinois, and the
Wisconsin Districts take the liberty of asking a Reverend Delegate
Synod to state whether it is of the conviction that the Pro-Gymnasium
[preparatory secondary school] in Milwaukee should be expanded into a
full Gymnasium [classical secondary school]." (Petition of the delegates
named.)

It was remarked on this: as three years ago the three districts
named, through their representatives, asked the Synod to approve their
proceeding with preparations for establishing a Pro-Gymnasium, so they
now likewise considered it their further duty to ask the Synod whether
it was convinced, along with the representatives of the districts named,
that it would serve the whole body's best interest if the Pro-Gymnasium
at Milwaukee — now brought into being and presently consisting of
three classes — were expanded into a full Gymnasium.

It was true that from the discussions on this subject held at the
last Delegate Synod one could recognize that the General Synod, even
had it not been asked, would have put no obstacle in the way of
expanding the Gymnasium into a full one — indeed, in these very days
the remark had repeatedly been made in passing that we could well use
two full Gymnasiums — but it would depend very much, with regard to
the further proceeding of the three districts named concerning the
Pro-Gymnasium at Milwaukee, on whether the Synod, for the present,
advised against the expansion to a full Gymnasium or encouraged it.

Resolved, that the Synod leave the matter of expanding the
Pro-Gymnasium at Milwaukee into a full Gymnasium entirely to the
