Oktober 1882

J. Bading, Präſes.
T. J. Große, Sekretär.

Schluß⸗Erklärung.

In ſeiner Schlußrede hatte Herr Prof. Schmidt unter anderem be⸗

mehrere Male Herrn Prof. Schmidt zugerufen: Herr Prof. Schmidt! Sie
haben jetzt nicht das Wort! Dennoch redete er immer darauf los.

*) Es war dies am Schluß der 2. Sitzung, Donnerstag⸗Vormittag. Vgl. Seite 33.

that you yourselves will likewise admonish and entreat Prof. Schmidt to desist even now from his hostile undertakings, to recognize the wrong he has committed, and to make it possible for us to negotiate with him again as a brother on the doctrine itself.

In conclusion we assure the dear brethren in the Hon. Norwegian Synod that we truly sympathize with you in the hot struggle in which you stand, and you may be certain that we stand at your side with the most heartfelt wishes for blessing and with prayers that God may let you succeed in winning the victory for the truth in your synod as well.

With brotherly greeting, signed in the name and by commission of the
Ev. Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America
Chicago, Illinois, Monday morning,
October 9, 1882

J. Bading, President.
T. J. Große, Secretary.

Closing Declaration.

In his closing speech Prof. Schmidt had asserted, among other things, that he was rejected with tumult as often as he tried to open his mouth in the Conference. Cf. page 52. The *Synodalkonferenz* [Synodical Conference] therefore felt obliged, for the sake of the truth, to give the following declaration, closing the matter with Schmidt, on Monday morning:

What Prof. Schmidt said here can refer only to the one case in which, when he was no longer to speak and yet went on speaking, several people protested loudly against it at the same time.*) Otherwise nothing occurred that could have been so interpreted, and no one will be able to maintain that he was rejected tumultuously. On the contrary, although Prof. Schmidt had been assured that he had now done what was demanded of him, he went on speaking all the same, and this moved several members of the Synodical Conference to raise a loud objection, and the impropriety consisted only in the fact that several did so at the same time. — Prof. Schmidt's remark has pained everyone, because we know how all this will be exploited. Furthermore it is to be considered that, when Prof. Schmidt wanted to speak, the motion for adjournment had already been made and seconded. And finally the chair had called out to Prof. Schmidt several times: Prof. Schmidt! You do not now have the floor! Yet he kept on speaking regardless.

*) This was at the close of the 2nd session, Thursday morning. Cf. page 33.
