Ohio u. a.

excluded from the Synodical Conference through the grievous step of the Ohio Synod. In conscience, for the sake of doctrine, they then left the Ohio Synod and constituted themselves as a synod of their own, and in order not to be confused with Ohio they took a different name. Our constitution, to be sure, says in § IV:
"Only the totality of the synods represented in it shall decide on the admission of church bodies into the union of the Synodical Conference, and such admission can therefore take place only by the concurring resolution of all the synods united"; —
but here it is naturally thought of such synods as are wholly foreign church bodies, standing until now outside the Synodical Conference. The members of the Concordia Synod have until now been members of the Conference. Hence it should hardly be regarded as an admission, but rather as a restoring of the right which was taken from them in spite of their protest. Since, however, they have constituted themselves under a new name, an admission has become necessary.
It was therefore unanimously
Resolved, to receive the Hon. Concordia Synod into the union of the Synodical Conference, on the condition that the individual synods of the Conference subsequently ratify this.
V. Withdrawal of the Ohio Synod
The following letter from the Ohio Synod was read and laid *ad acta* [on file]:
Columbus, Ohio, September 21, 1881.
To Prof. L. Larsen, President of the "Synodalkonferenz"!
Honorable Sir!
Herewith I send you the resolutions of the "Joint Synod of Ohio and Other States" concerning its separation from the Synodical Conference. I enclose them as they were handed to me by the recording secretary. Leaving the rest concerning these resolutions to your discretion, I remain, respectfully,
Yours,
E. Schmidt,
at present Corresponding Secretary of the Synod of Ohio, etc.
