IV.

IV. Admission of the Concordia Synod

On Saturday afternoon the following petition for admission into the *Synodalkonferenz* [Synodical Conference] was read:

"To the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America.

Honorable and highly esteemed brethren!

The pastors and congregations of the Concordia Synod, who until now were connected with the Synodical Conference through the Synod of Ohio and Other States and were represented through its delegates in this Honorable body, have been deprived of representation at the convention of the Synodical Conference by the withdrawal of the Ohio Synod. When the Synod of Ohio had resolved to separate itself, we declared to it at once: "we could not withdraw from the Honorable Synodical Conference." (Proceedings of the Joint Synod of Ohio 1881, p. 57.) By this we wished to testify before the whole church that it is a matter of conscience for us, under present circumstances, to remain in connection with the Synodical Conference.

Since, in view of the church situation and the circumstances of our congregations, we have now come together under the name "Concordia-Synode" [Concordia Synod] and are still willing to maintain our connection with the Synodical Conference in future also; since, further, we have no foreign elements among us, but all pastors and congregations of the Concordia Synod were previously represented in the Hon. Synodical Conference, so that we may hope that in our case a decision on admission need not be made by the synods connected with the Synodical Conference, we ask the Hon. convention

to admit our elected delegates to representation at this year's convention

and, in case this could be done only provisionally, to bring about the admission of the Concordia Synod by the way prescribed in the Constitution, § IV.

In the name of the pastors and congregations of the Concordia Synod

P. Brand, at present President.
R. Walz, Secretary.

The Synodical Conference granted the petition for the following reason: All the members of the Hon. Concordia Synod were, as long as they were within the Ohio Synod, members of the Synodical Conference. When the Ohio Synod resolved to withdraw from the Synodical Conference, they protested against it, but regrettably in vain, and are thus only
